## Stone that looks like it grew there

Natural boulder and rock walls bring a rugged, timeless look that suits Tooele County’s rural and hillside properties in a way manufactured block rarely does. Against open ground with the Oquirrhs behind it, basalt and fieldstone read as part of the landscape. Block reads as a product.

We place basalt, granite and fieldstone boulders for decorative walls, bed and driveway edges, accent groupings and low retaining work. The craft is in selection and placement rather than construction technique. Every boulder has a good face and several bad ones, and getting the good face turned outward and the stone keyed properly against its neighbours is what separates a wall that looks native from a row of rocks somebody dropped.

Setting matters as much as choosing. Boulders placed on the surface will move: frost, runoff and settling all work on them. We excavate and bed each stone so it sits into the ground, then backfill and compact behind so the wall holds its line. On anything doing light retaining work we also manage where water goes, because saturated soil behind stone still pushes.

The honest caveat: rock walls are not an engineered retaining system. They do decorative and low-retaining work well. When a slope has real weight and water behind it, you want a segmental block wall with geogrid reinforcement and a full drainage envelope. We will tell you which one your slope needs, even when the boulder wall would be the easier sale.

## Rock Walls questions, answered

What rock is used for boulder walls in Utah?

Basalt, granite and natural fieldstone are the common choices here. Basalt has a dark, dense look that reads well against open rural ground. Granite is lighter and more varied. Fieldstone is the most rustic. We match the stone to your property's character and what's already on site.

Are boulder walls structural?

They can handle low retaining, but they aren't an engineered load-bearing system. Once you're holding real grade, particularly anything tall, or a slope with weight and water behind it, you want a segmental block wall with geogrid reinforcement and a proper drainage envelope.

How do I choose between a rock wall and a retaining wall?

Start with the job it has to do. If it's decorative, edges a bed or driveway, or holds a modest bank, a rock wall is a good fit and often looks better on a rural lot. If it's holding grade you cannot afford to lose, it needs the engineered system. We'll assess the slope and tell you which.

How much does a rock wall cost?

Projects commonly start around $2,000 and scale with boulder size, quantity and haulage. Access is a bigger factor here than most jobs. If the excavator can reach the wall line easily the cost drops significantly compared to a spot we have to work around.

Do rock walls need drainage?

Boulder walls are naturally more permeable than block, so water finds its way through the gaps. Even so, where a wall holds any real grade we backfill with gravel and manage where the water goes, because saturated soil behind stone still causes movement.

Do boulder walls control erosion?

Combined with grading and planting, yes. The stone slows and breaks up runoff, and planting in the soil pockets between boulders puts roots into the slope. Rock alone on an actively eroding bank without the grading work is a partial fix.

Will the boulders shift over time?

Not if they're bedded properly. Stones set on the surface without excavation will move. We dig in each boulder so it sits into the ground and keys against its neighbours, which is what keeps a wall stable for decades.

Can you plant between the stones?

Yes, and we recommend it. Soil pockets between boulders take drought-tolerant perennials and low shrubs that soften the stone and root into the slope. It's the difference between a rock wall and a rock pile.

Do rock walls suit suburban yards or just rural lots?

They work in both, but they read best where there's some openness or a natural backdrop: rural Erda and Grantsville lots, hillside properties, the benches. In a tight subdivision back yard a segmental block wall often suits the scale better.

How long does a boulder wall take to build?

It depends far more on placement than on length. A short accent wall can be a day. A long terraced run on a hillside with careful face selection takes several. We'd rather spend the extra hours getting stones turned right than rush a wall that looks wrong for twenty years.
