## Outdoor living space that survives Utah winters

A patio extends your house into the yard. It is where the table goes, where the fire pit sits, and where a back yard stops being something you look at and becomes somewhere you spend time. Done properly, it is also the single hardscape element that gets used the most per dollar spent.

The thing that decides whether a patio still looks good in ten years is the base. Utah freeze-thaw cycles are unforgiving: water that gets trapped in a shallow or poorly compacted base freezes, expands, and lifts the surface unevenly. That is why we excavate to depth and compact road base in lifts rather than dumping and levelling in one pass. It is invisible work and it is most of the job.

We build with pavers, flagstone and concrete. Pavers are what we recommend for most back yards here, because the jointed field flexes with seasonal movement instead of cracking, and individual units can be lifted and replaced if one is ever damaged or stained. Flagstone gives a softer, more natural look and suits garden walkways and rural properties, at a higher labour cost. Concrete is smooth and economical up front, but a crack in a slab is permanent.

Beyond the patio itself we build seating walls, fire pits, steps and walkways. Fire pits in particular get disproportionate value from thoughtful placement: clearance from the house and fences for safety, and an eye on prevailing wind so you are not sitting in smoke. We stake the layout on site so you can walk it before we dig.

## Common problems we solve

### A back yard with nowhere to sit

Grass is not furniture. A properly sized patio, even a modest one, changes how much a yard gets used more than almost anything else you could spend the same money on.

### A patio that has heaved or sunk

Base failure, essentially always. Sometimes a section can be lifted, re-based and relaid; sometimes the whole field needs redoing. We’ll tell you which after we look at how it’s moving.

### Water running the wrong way off hard surfaces

A patio sheds water somewhere. If nobody planned where, it often ends up against the foundation or in a neighbouring bed. We set the fall and tie the drainage into the wider yard.

## Patios questions, answered

How much does a paver patio cost in Utah?

Patios are priced per square foot, so size is the main driver, followed by material and how much excavation the site needs. Typical projects start around $3,500 and larger outdoor living areas with seating walls and a fire pit run considerably higher. Access matters too. A back yard we can reach with equipment costs less than one we hand-barrow into.

Pavers, concrete or flagstone. Which is best here?

Pavers handle freeze-thaw best because the joints let the field flex instead of cracking, and individual units can be replaced. Poured concrete is smooth and often cheaper up front but cracks are permanent. Flagstone gives the most natural look at a higher labour cost. For most Utah back yards we recommend pavers.

How deep does the base need to be?

Deeper than most people expect, and it varies with soil and use. Compacted road base installed in lifts is what stops frost heave from lifting and tilting the surface over winter. Cutting base depth is the single most common corner cut in cheap patio bids and it shows up within a few seasons.

Will my patio heave or settle over the winter?

Not if the base is right. Heaving comes from water trapped in inadequately compacted or shallow base freezing and expanding. Proper depth, compaction in lifts, and drainage that moves water away are what prevent it.

Can you replace a cracked paver later?

Yes, and that's one of the main advantages of pavers. A damaged or stained unit lifts out and a replacement drops in, with fresh polymeric sand swept into the joints. No patching, no mismatched concrete.

How much does adding a fire pit cost?

Relative to the patio itself, a fire pit is a modest add-on. It's usually the cheapest thing you can add that changes how much the space actually gets used. We handle placement for clearance and airflow as part of the design.

Where should a fire pit go?

A safe distance from the house, fences and any overhanging branches, with room to walk behind seated chairs and enough openness that smoke isn't trapped. Prevailing wind direction matters more than people expect. We take it into account when we stake the layout.

Does the patio go in before or after the landscaping?

Usually sequenced with grading and before final planting and beds. The patio changes the grade and where water runs, so setting it first means the surrounding landscape can be built to work with it rather than around it.

How long does a patio take to build?

A straightforward back-yard patio is commonly a few days: excavation and base, then laying, then finishing. Adding a seating wall, fire pit or steps extends it. Wet ground and material delivery timing are the usual causes of a shifted schedule.

Can you build a walkway to match?

Yes, and matching walkways to the patio ties a yard together. Same material and pattern, same base standard, with the width set for how it'll actually be used. A path to a side gate needs less than a main approach to the front door.
