## Crisp lines and low-water beds

Decorative rock and clean edging are the finishing details that make a yard look considered rather than assembled. They also happen to be the lowest-maintenance, lowest-water surface you can put down in a Utah landscape.

The finished quality of a gravel bed comes down to three things, and none of them are the rock. First, the bed line: a curve that flows or a straight run that’s actually straight, staked out on site so you see it before anything is dug. Second, the edge: a physical barrier that keeps rock out of the lawn and lawn out of the rock, because without one the line blurs within two seasons. Third, depth over quality geotextile fabric, because gravel spread thin lets light through and weeds follow.

We install steel, poly and concrete curbing. Steel gives the cleanest, thinnest line and holds a curve well. Concrete curbing is heavier, more formal and effectively permanent. Poly is the budget option and does the job in lighter-duty positions. We’ll tell you which suits your bed rather than defaulting to whatever is on the truck.

Gravel work usually pairs with a change in how the bed is watered. Spray heads over gravel are wasteful and often pointless. The water lands on rock. Beds going to gravel generally want drip underneath, sized to the planting. We plan the two together so you’re not burying an irrigation layout that no longer makes sense.

## Common problems we solve

### A gravel bed full of weeds

Almost always depth or fabric. Thin gravel lets light through, and cheap plastic sheeting tears and traps water. Correct depth over woven geotextile solves most of it permanently.

### Rock migrating into the lawn

No edge, or an edge that has worked loose. Mowing and rain push gravel outward until the bed line disappears. A properly set steel or concrete edge stops it.

### Beds being sprayed instead of dripped

Spray heads throwing water over rock is money on the ground. Converting the bed to drip cuts the consumption and keeps the plants healthier.

### A yard that needs less watering and less mowing

Reducing lawn area and replacing it with edged gravel beds and drought-tolerant planting is the most direct way to cut both. Qualifying conversions may be rebate-eligible through Utah Water Savers.

## Gravel & Edging questions, answered

How deep should decorative gravel be?

Deep enough to block light from reaching the fabric and the soil below, which is more than most DIY installs manage. Too thin and weeds find their way up through it within a season or two. We set depth based on the rock size you choose and the use of the bed.

Does gravel need weed fabric underneath?

Yes. Quality woven geotextile keeps soil from working up into the rock and stops most weeds from below. Avoid solid plastic sheeting. It holds water, breaks down, and eventually makes more mess than it prevents.

What rock should I choose?

It comes down to look, scale and use. Larger rock reads bolder and doesn't scatter as easily; smaller gravel gives a finer texture and walks better. Colour should relate to your house and hardscape rather than fighting them. We bring options and show you what they look like in place.

Which edging is most durable?

Steel and concrete curbing are the most durable. Steel gives a very clean, thin line and holds a curve well. Concrete curbing is heavier, more formal, and essentially permanent. Poly edging is the budget-friendly, flexible option and does fine in lighter-duty situations.

Does edging really keep gravel in place?

Yes, and it's the difference between a bed that stays crisp and one that migrates into the lawn. Without a physical barrier, mowing, foot traffic and rain gradually move rock outward until the line disappears.

Is gravel better than mulch for Utah beds?

It depends on the planting. Gravel lasts indefinitely and never needs refreshing, which suits water-wise beds and low-maintenance areas. Bark mulch adds organic matter and keeps soil cooler, which some plants prefer, but it breaks down and needs topping up roughly annually. Gravel does radiate more heat.

How much does gravel and edging cost?

Projects commonly start around $800 and scale with area and linear footage. Gravel is priced by coverage and depth, edging by linear foot and material. Removing existing turf or old bark first adds to it, as does difficult access.

Can you convert a lawn area to gravel beds?

Yes, and it's one of our most common water-wise requests. We remove and haul the turf, prep the base, set edging, lay fabric, run drip for any planting, and finish with gravel. Qualifying turf conversions may be eligible for Utah Water Savers rebates.

Will weeds still come through?

Far fewer, but no gravel bed is permanently weed-free. Seeds blow in and germinate in the dust that accumulates in the rock over time, which is a top-down problem fabric can't solve. Occasional spot weeding keeps it looking sharp, and it's a fraction of the work a mulched bed needs.

Can gravel go right up against the house?

Usually yes, and it's often a good choice for a foundation strip since it doesn't hold moisture against the wall the way mulch can. The grade still has to fall away from the building: gravel doesn't fix a drainage problem, it just hides it.
